ROLE OF MEDIA IN THE CURRENT POLITICAL SCENARIO IN INDIA

The vote is the most powerful instrument ever devised by man for breaking down injustice and destroying walls which imprison men because they are different from other men,” said Lyndon B Johnson.

Media plays a very important role in our country. It has been actively participating in proving us information about our politicians. I hope you remember that recently elections took place in our country. Didn’t you see how hard media worked to provide us information? It started broadcasting information about elections well before the elections and till today they tell us the actions of the political parties and their leaders.

Malcolm X said, “Media is the most powerful entity on the Earth. They have the power to show the innocent guilty and the guilty innocent, and that’s power. Because they control the minds of the masses.” Media plays a vital role in molding a good society. It gives us information of what’s going around the world. It provides a public forum for debates between political leaders. During campaigns, opposing candidates often broadcast advertisements and debates with each other on television. Many voters learn a great deal about the candidates and the issues by watching these advertisements and debates. Even during years without elections, the mass media allows elected officials to explain their actions via news stories and interviews.

The worst part I find about this is that some people buy media. And media then shows everything in favor of the candidate. Don’t you think it’s a wrong way?

Media is really important but it’s must that it has freedom. It shouldn’t be bought by any political party for its proper functioning. In the end I would like to conclude by saying a few lines of the poem written by Mike Wilson to highlight the importance of media in our lives.

The media controls our life,
Directs our thoughts, explores the strife
Of little things that don’t deserve
To be expanded with such verve.
The general public does its best
To sift the news and leave the rest
Inconsequentially to those

Whose income is from talk back shows.
